Quick presentation I had to prepare to link to from another presentation! There are a lot of misperceptions about twitter, many of which I used to share. This stops people using it, which is a shame.
Basically, people who don’t ‘get’ twitter, tend not to realise how much it is about dialogue, interaction, and engagement. So this is an effort to tell people – because I think twitter is ace, and information professionals who aren’t using it are in real danger of being left out of the loop.

Hello – this is great. I’ve got an article coming up in CILIP Update on how much, how and why information professionals are using Twitter and blogging, reporting on latest research. Well I say ‘latest’, but due to cuts at CILIP, there’s so few pages for good, researched articles to be published in these days, I wrote it some months ago…
I’m glad you’re getting the word out via professional channels…

Unfortunately, you also come across managers who don’t believe in Web 2.0 – any use of the internet to go to Facebook and Twitter is frowned upon and not seen as “work”. We’ve been told in no uncertain terms that we are not to visit such sites. No point joining in that case.
Hi Libbie, yes I understand. Originally the slide about twitter’s API being locked down also contained the words ‘plus the Council won’t let me use it’ but I took it out because the slide after answering it became so complicated!
But I disagree there’s no point in joining up – it’s so incredibly useful, it drives most of my professional development. (Just by hearing about other useful stuff, if nothing else.) So if I couldn’t get on at work, I’d still be using it on my phone, and at home.

Okay, got one objection which will probably not apply to many people, but it can’t be answered with “It’s a conversation”
I can’t use it because I don’t have a computer or a smart phone.
cheers!
Hi Ichigo, yeah I did wonder about that. A lot of the benefits of Twitter are a lot less applicable if you don’t have access to the net anyway…
